On August 26th, TMZ.com broke the news about a new and unbelievable family tragedy for Mariah Carey. The TMZ headline reported that Mariah’s mom and sister passed away on the same day. They wrote that Mariah “is facing double the heartbreak” after her “mom, Patricia, and her sister, Alison,” lost their lives “on the same day over the weekend.”
In a shocking statement to TMZ, Mariah mentioned her broken heart over her mom’s passing.
Tragic News
Then, she described the “tragic turn of events” in losing her sister “on the same day.” Mariah’s fans and followers might think that her mom and sister passed away together, but that’s not the case. TMZ couldn’t even set the record straight, reporting that the circumstances of Patricia and Alison’s passings “are not known at this time.”
However, Mariah provided one bittersweet clue in her statement. She told TMZ that she feels “blessed” that she was “able to spend the last week” with Patricia before the end came. Mariah added that she appreciates all the “love and support” she will receive and is grateful for everyone who respects her “privacy during this impossible time.”
Complicated Relationships
Mariah deserves her privacy at this moment, but she’s been shockingly open in the past about her imperfect relationships with her mom and especially her sister. As TMZ explained, “Mariah’s relationship with her mom was pretty complicated,” and Mariah spilled all the tea in “her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey.”
Mariah described her bond with Patricia as a “prickly rope” of wildly mixed feelings, including “pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment.” TMZ also called their relationship “rocky,” but they reported that Mariah and Patricia “maintained their bond” throughout Patricia’s lifetime. At the time, Mariah wrote that Patricia “did the best she could,” adding that she would “always love” her mom.
But there’s another twisted side to Mariah’s life story involving Alison.
TMZ explained that Mariah and “her estranged sister” had a complicated relationship, and Mariah’s memoir included such explosive details that Alison “sued her famous sister” over claims that she made. On August 27th, the Daily Express published a shocking report claiming that a “friend” of Alison’s went public with sad details about the final three weeks of her life.

According to Express, “Mariah’s troubled sister… was in hospice care” before she passed away, and they also wrote that more information about Alison was going to come out. Express reported that Alison’s “close friend,” Dave Baker, told the UK edition of The Sun that Alison was receiving hospice care in her home because of “a problem with [her] internal organs.”
Dave “paid tribute” to Alison and described to the media outlet who she was underneath her “tough exterior.” He called Alison “highly intelligent, warm, and sensitive.” Dave explained that he’d known Alison “for nine years,” and he added that he’d been helping to care for her in the final stage of her life.
Dave confessed that he would miss her dearly and hoped that Alison’s soul would now be free from pain.
A local New York state outlet called the Times Union reported that Alison was 63 when she passed away “at her home in Greene County.” Express confirmed the “unfortunate” truth that Mariah and Alison never reconciled, and Mariah told her side of the story in her memoir.
Mariah claimed in her book that it was “emotionally and physically safer” for her to “not have any contact” with Alison and her brother, Morgan Carey. Mariah accused her siblings of “selling lies” to magazines and attacking her in public “for decades.”

Patricia “became Pat” to Mariah, and her brother and sister became her “ex” siblings. Mariah wrote, “I had to stop expecting them to one day miraculously become the mommy, big brother, and big sister I fantasized about.” Mariah tried to set the record straight in her memoir, although it sounded almost impossible. She claimed that her story with Patricia meant “betrayal and beauty… love and abandonment… and sacrifice and survival.”
Fortunately, Mariah and Patricia performed together on at least one occasion, when they appeared on an ABC holiday special called Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You. People reported that Patricia and Mariah “performed a festive mother-daughter duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus.”
